Are rookies the biggest threat as a no. 2 wide receiver?

Lots of people are projecting Taylor Gabriel as the no. 2 wideout for the Bears this year, but I’m here to tell you to pump the brakes a little bit. Chicago now has two rookie receivers who I believe will both make the roster — Miller being a lock, of course.

Let’s talk about Javon Wims, though, for a minute.

For those of you who may not know, Wims was a basketball player. He only has two years of experience playing football in college. It was more of something for him to do to keep himself in shape for basketball.

So, do we really know what he can do? That’s the question. I think he has so much untapped potential that no one could see in a Georgia offense which featured so many weapons, especially in their back field.

At 6-foot-3, Wims has the ideal size to line up on the outside. I really believe he is going to surprise some people in camp. He is somebody who can go up and grab the ball at a high point, separating himself from his coverage in the air. He doesn’t create separation on his routes very well, but with his size, his ability to separate when the ball is up in the air makes that irrelevant.

If we were talking strictly about overall targets, yes, I think Miller is going to top Gabriel by quite a bit. Seriously, I believe Gabriel is a nice weapon to have, but I don’t think he is going to be used or targeted as much as Miller. Like I said, even Wims could surprise some folks and end up moving up the depth chart pretty quickly.
