Chicago Bears: 5 veterans who must step up in 2018
By Ryan Heckman
Leonard Floyd
Like Trevathan, Leonard Floyd has had trouble staying healthy. Floyd is a guy that Pace traded up for two years ago and many wondered why. Some thought it was a reach, but Pace liked him enough and had his convictions.
Floyd is a superbly athletic and rangy pass rusher when he’s healthy and motivated. If he’s healthy and on the field, though, there are some times where he’s been questioned for maybe taking a play or two off.
I am not here to make that judgement call. I don’t know Floyd’s heart, nor will I attempt to make any guesses. But, what I do know, is that he is as talented and explosive as anyone at the position when he’s on his “A” game.
In 22 games, Floyd has posted 11.5 sacks. He’s got a forced fumble, two recoveries and four passes defended as well. He’s pretty well-rounded, a lot like his fellow backer Trevathan.
Also like Trevathan, this defense needs him on the field if they want to make that next step forward. The pass rush was already in trouble before the draft, and after only selecting one at the position on day three, it doesn’t look like much backup is coming any time soon. Floyd needs to be “the man” and make it known that he is out for blood this season.
