A couple of years ago, if you would have mentioned Austin Rivers as a possibility for the Bulls, most might have laughed in your face. But, coming off a career season with the Los Angeles Clippers, Rivers might just have played himself into a decent contract this offseason.
That might end up being the problem, since the Bulls are likely set on Dunn starting the season at point guard. Will Rivers opt-in with the Clippers, or will he test the free agency waters? That’s another question. If he does test the waters, does another team pay him to come and be their starting point guard?
The Rivers situation is intriguing, that’s for certain. I would like to see him in Chicago, but not on starter’s money. Could that take him out of the conversation entirely? It could. But, right now I’m talking about guys that can’t be overlooked and would fit in well with the Bulls. If Rivers and Dunn were to share minutes relatively even-split, would they be able to have the kind of impact Fred Hoiberg would like?
As I said, Rivers may be a long shot. But, he’s not a guy to look past this summer if he opts out. The Bulls should absolutely keep tabs on his situation.
