The Chicago White Sox stroll into Wrigley Field this weekend to take on the Chicago Cubs. Bragging rights and much more are on the line.

This weekend marks the first installment of the 2018 Crosstown Cup between the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs. After this weekend, the teams won’t meet again until September. The two teams enter the series looking to secure much more than bragging rights.

The rivalry between the two teams runs deep, dating back to the early 1900s. At that time, Charlie Comiskey, the owner of the White Sox, wanted to relocate his St. Paul Saints minor league team to Chicago. After some negotiations, Comiskey moved his team to Chicago and named them the White Stockings (the original name of the Cubs)

From the moment the White Sox arrived in Chicago, they’ve butted heads with their crosstown rivals.

For those who didn’t know, the two Chicago teams actually met in the 1906 World Series, with the White Sox winning the title in six games. And in the regular season, the White Sox also hold the edge by a four-game margin, 58-54.

Blowouts. Brawls. All-Star talent. This rivalry has given Chicago baseball fans a little bit of everything over the years. But 2018 will provide a slightly different feel.

This weekend, the rebuilding Sox are looking to “arrive” in a different way — one which shows they are on the way up as a franchise. The Cubs, on the other hand, are looking to gain some momentum in an otherwise disappointing start to the season. We take a look at the matchups below as well as the importance of the series to each team.
