Chicago Bears: Round-by-round draft grades for each pick
Javon Wims
Wide receiver
Grade: B-
It didn’t come as a shock that the Bears double dipped at the wide receiver position in the draft. The Bears certainly don’t want to go into a situation again where they have to use a Josh Bellamy or Tanner Gentry. Wims is another low-risk/high-reward project for Pace. Pro Football Focus had him as their 99th overall player in the draft — that’s fantastic value.
The aspects of Wims’ game that stands out is his big catch radius. Wims is a big-bodied wide receiver that can make tough, contested catches. He can sky for the football when it’s in the air and come down with it.
Wims is also a solid pure hands catcher, where once the ball hits him in the hands it’s stick. Wims is a solid athlete than given credit for. While not the fastest, he makes up for it with his size. WIms fights for the football when the ball is headed in his direction.
The key with Wims sticking around after training camp is his route running ability. Wims has trouble separating from opposing cornerbacks. This is why you see him mostly on his highlight tapes making those impressive tough grabs.

Wims also has to show that he can be a factor on special teams. Say what you will about Josh Bellamy, but the reason he sticks around is that he understands the value of special teams. With Wims, he’s going to be a development project for Pace and the coaching staff. However, if he puts it all together, could develop into a starter down the road.
