Chicago Bears: An Updated Post-Draft Depth Chart
Wide Receivers
WR: Allen Robinson, Bennie Fowler, Tanner Gentry, Javon Wims
Slot: Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Demarcus Ayers, Garrett Johnson
WR: Kevin White, Joshua Bellamy, Marlon Brown
The buzzword I will preach here is “competition”. There are a lot of really good things about this group. It’s a nice mix of everything and I can foresee battles for the fourth, fifth, and sixth slots on the roster lasting all summer long.
The second thing I will point out is that I haven’t labeled positions (possession/split end, flanker/zebra, etc.) with the exception of the slot. Why did I not put a ton of weight into charting everyone? Matt Nagy plans to use everyone everywhere, so it shouldn’t matter much.
Also, I fully expect Miller to be the third starter; Nagy did say he would start out in the slot. But I’d venture to say he’ll probably wind up as their flanker when week one rolls around.
Robinson, Gabriel, and Miller are roster locks. But everything else is fluid. Wims was just drafted, but that doesn’t guarantee that he’ll make the roster. He will need to earn it against the vets.
Kevin White’s do-or-die season has come. Regardless if his option is picked up for next season, this is time for him to show if he has it or not.
Fowler and Brown are on one-year deals and both are more than likely just camp bodies. Fowler might offer more value on special teams than on offense.
Josh Bellamy didn’t seem happy when Robinson and Gabriel were signed in the offseason. While I can understand why he feels this way, this has been a long time coming. There isn’t much reason to believe he was going to be a critical part of the Bears future. An immaculate preseason and training camp will need to be his saving grace.
Tight Ends
Move: Trey Burton, Daniel Brown, Colin Thompson
In-Line: Adam Shaheen, Dion Sims, Ben Braunecker
Similarly to the quarterback and running back positions, there really is nothing changing here. I will point out that it’s strange to still see Dion Sims on the roster. He really should’ve been waived months ago, but perhaps his blocking still holds value. Either way, I won’t hold my breath on him getting snaps.
Brown, “Braunk” and Thompson will likely fight for the fourth and final tight end spot on the roster. The winner gets to be a weekly inactive. Not much else to say. Here’s hoping Adam Shaheen not only gets to be apart of the game plan but doesn’t get abandoned as the game progresses.
