Chicago Bears: Initial undrafted free agent haul proves direction of team

More Defense
Defensive Back Michael Joseph, Dubuque
Once again, Pace went after a small-school standout. This time, it’s Michael Joseph out of Dubuque. Joseph is another guy who was projected to be drafted, in either the sixth or seventh round, who the Bears now have a shot with as a free agent.
Joseph is quite an athlete and can contribute on returns as well. He can play any corner position, so maybe he gives some competition to backing up Bryce Callahan in the slot. Joseph has great ball skills with receiver-like hands.
This is one I think who could stick around at least on the practice squad, although if the Bears aren’t careful, he could get snatched up before getting placed there later in the summer.
Inside Linebacker Nyles Morgan, Notre Dame
Here is another player with a connection to Hiestand. While Nyles Morgan played defense, it never hurts to have a familiar face in your corner. Morgan lacks the athleticism it takes to really succeed at inside linebacker as a pro, but could end up contributing on special teams if he has a solid camp.
Like John Timu, Morgan’s road to being on a roster is going to be tough. Timu will probably be some stiff competition for Morgan in camp, and I just don’t see the former giving way. It’s a long shot, but don’t count Morgan out as a special-teamer or practice squad candidate.
Defensive Back Nick Orr, TCU
Nick Orr was likely brought in because the Bears could use some competition at safety. Orr has played both corner and safety in the past, but would fit best at the latter in the NFL.
Orr lacks the speed and athleticism to truly shine as a pro, but is as physical as it gets when it comes to delivering a hit. His downhill style presents a lot to like, just like current starter Adrian Amos. If Orr is to stick around, it will likely be as a special teams contributor. However, with a strong camp, you never know — he might have a chance to earn a backup safety role.
