Chicago Bears: Initial undrafted free agent haul proves direction of team
By Ryan Heckman
EDGE
Cavon Walker, Maryland
The Bears only added one EDGE rusher via the draft, so they are going to try out a lot of undrafted guys, beginning with Cavon Walker out of Maryland.
Walker was at one point a linebacker and transitioned to defensive end. It is unclear where the Bears will try him at, but ideally they’d like to see him make it as an outside linebacker rushing the passer.
Walker has an aggressive burst, but is going to be a project. While he likely won’t make the roster, Walker will certainly give the group much-needed competition in camp.
Andrew Trumbetti, Notre Dame
Consider this the Harry Hiestand effect. Trumbetti did not get invited to the NFL combine, but the Bears sent folks to his Pro Day and saw enough to take a shot on him as an UDFA.
Elijah Norris, Shepherd
Norris is an athletic pass rusher out of — surprise — a small school. Never put it past Pace and his guys to go and get players like this. While Shepherd plays fast and has very good pad level, his strength could improve quite a bit if he is going to make it as a pro.
Norris is a former tight end who is looking to find a home at outside linebacker. He’s best suited in a 3-4 scheme which is why the Bears were quick to bring him in.
Olubunmi Rotimi, Old Dominion
I am sure the media does not want to have to try and spell and pronounce Rotimi’s name, so they might be happy to know he will likely also not make the roster. While I could be wrong, Rotimi is another project that the Bears will use in camp to simply see what they’ve got.
Competition is key at the positions of need, so that’s why Pace has brought in a few of these guys already.
