Chicago Bears: Initial undrafted free agent haul proves direction of team
By Ryan Heckman
The early haul of undrafted free agents by the Chicago Bears proves that Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy are headed somewhere special.
The Chicago Bears had one heck of a weekend. Ryan Pace did his best to bring in tons of talent via the 2018 NFL Draft and, for the most part, impressed in a big way.
Beginning with Georgia linebacker Roquan Smith in the first round, Pace got the Bears off and running. This was followed by offensive lineman James Daniels out of Iowa in the second, and then a surprise trade back into the second round to select Memphis wide receiver Anthony Miller.
After just three picks, Pace had given his team three day-one impact players. Day three, however, was of course the most eventful as it saw Pace take a handful of players in the later rounds who could end up being real difference-makers. Following the action in Round 7, Pace began the always-interesting task of acquiring even more talent via the undrafted free agent pool.
It’s always amazing the kind of guys who come out of this pool of players, and the Bears seem to have found a couple of key guys who have a great shot at making the team come summer.
Overall, the large number of players to initially sign with the Bears after going undrafted prove one thing is true: Players want to be a part of what’s happening in Chicago with Matt Nagy and his staff.
Take a look at some of the talented players Pace was able to agree with immediately following the 2018 NFL Draft — some of which should have heard their name called earlier.
