Chicago Bears: Five best players available in the second round
Courtland Sutton
Wide receiver, SMU
Sutton was discussed as possibly going as high as 14 to the Green Bay Packers. He was even looked at by some draft experts as the best wide receiver prospect in this draft. Thursday night we saw two wide receivers go before Sutton in Maryland’s D.J. Moore and Alabama’s Calvin Ridley.
The Bears created a hole at wide receiver by not matching the New Orleans Saints offer to Cameron Meredith. As the roster currently stands after big free agent acquisition Allen Robinson, the Bears have Taylor Gabriel who is best used as a compliment receiver in the slot and occasionally on the outside. Kevin White, meanwhile, has only played in five games in three years.
The more depth and competition there is at wide receiver, the better this offense can be. Sutton has drawn comparisons to former Bear Alshon Jeffery. He’s a big-bodied WR that is at his best getting the ball in space and getting yards after the catch.
However, when you put on the highlight tape, another aspect that stands out is his large catch radius. He’s the best “go up and get it” receiver in this entire draft. If you are one of those fans that still have a sour taste in your mouth when the Bears let Jeffery walk last year, no worries. With Sutton, you are pretty much getting a carbon copy of that caliber of player if Pace opts to get him.
