Some have questioned whether the defense has a voice. There should be zero doubt about such a preposterous question.

He speaks like the leader. He acts like the leader. He presents himself to the young guys as the leader. The media knows he is a leader.

Akiem Hicks is the clear-cut leader of that defense — no questions asked.

I have seen a few people on social media making the rounds with ridiculous opinions on the Bears’ defensive leadership, or lack thereof, in their eyes. Hicks is one of the most under-appreciated players in football, but his teammates recognize the level of talent and leadership that is there.

Hicks spoke highly of Vic Fangio over the week, noting how he’s been able to tailor the defense to each of his players’ strengths — a lot like Nagy’s philosophy on offense.

In each of HIcks’ interviews this week, he gave you a strong feeling that it was his group. Asked about the defense’s goals for 2018, Hicks had two key words for reporters.

"“Top five.”"

Yes, he wants to see his side of the ball rise to the top five among NFL defenses. Last year, the Bears ended the season as the number 10 overall defense. So, why not top five this season?

Hicks knows the scheme. He knows his coordinator well. He knows his guys. He’s the heart and soul of that defense, and if you don’t believe me, go watch his tape. It’ll tell you all you need to know.

Oh, and when it comes to the next phase of the offseason, the NFL Draft, Hicks isn’t a fan.

"“I hate the draft. Somebody’s coming to replace me.”"
