Chicago Bears: Final 7-round mock draft
Pre-Combine Mock Selection: D.J. Moore, Wide Receiver, Maryland
Pre-Free Agency Mock Selection: Dorance Armstrong Jr., Edge, Kansas
I wouldn’t have bet on Chicago taking a wideout until mid to late Day Three a few weeks back, but things do change rather rapidly. The Bears brass has been looking at receivers the last few weeks, but since Ryan Pace shockingly opted to let Cameron Meredith walk, there has been a shift.
A shift in draft plans.
There isn’t a ton of depth behind Robinson and Taylor Gabriel. I would bet that Pace won’t go into training camp with Kevin White as their third best receiver.
Enter former SMU Mustang Courtland Sutton.
The Bears have been doing their homework on him of late not to mention putting his skills to the test:
Intriguingly enough, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared him to former Chicago Bear, Muhsin Muhammad.
Sutton is a big target at 6’3″ and 218 lbs. who excels in contested 50-50 ball situations. The route running and separation issues will likely limit his snaps, but he should get every chance to join the rest of the Bear’s jumbo targets on the field.
There has been some discussion that perhaps Dallas takes him at 19th overall because Dez Bryant is gone. My reasoning why he slips to 39th is that the Cowboys need help on defense, so they might wait on receiver help until later in the draft.
Fine with me. I like the idea of having Sutton, Robinson, and Burton creating matchup problems with defenses.
Perhaps Chicago isn’t the place where receivers go to die after all.
