By now, you’ve heard about the “most polished” wide receiver in this year’s draft class. Calvin Ridley is by far the most NFL-ready out of the group, but I don’t believe he possesses nearly the upside of some of the other prospects.

The Bears met with Ridley at the NFL Combine as well as in a private meeting.

His physical traits won’t blow you away, as you can tell by his above numbers from the combine. Ridley does offer some interesting strengths, though.

The Bears are not likely to use their no. 8 selection on him, so let’s get that out of the way. By the second round, he will be gone in all likelihood. However, I assume Pace is just doing his due diligence in making sure he has a grasp on Ridley, just in case anything crazy were to happen.

Ridley isn’t big, but he isn’t small either. He’s the type of possession receiver you like to have for your young quarterback to count on in dire situations. For Trubisky, Ridley would be a nice security blanket to have outside of his tight ends. He simply catches the football, and makes moves after the catch.

Ridley is a pro’s pro already when it comes to gaining yards after the catch, which is something often overlooked when transitioning from college to the NFL. A lot of young receivers are more worried about making the highlight type of catches and not necessarily gritting out those tough yards. Ridley is fantastic at doing the latter, and would be a welcome addition in Chicago by way of a draft-day trade.
