This is a guy who I believe is being overlooked by a lot of fans. Deon Cain is the classic example of a perfect WR2, especially within the Bears’ new offense. Cain’s combination of speed and pure route-running would give Nagy another player who could take the top off of a defense.
The biggest knock on Cain coming into the draft is his issue with drops. That type of weakness could go one of two ways as a pro: Either he fixes it or he gets worse. Something like that doesn’t typically stay the same, and more often than not, it is a mental game needing to be won by a youngster.
Here’s the interesting part about his drops — they rarely affected his quarterback’s passer rating.
Imagine if Cain didn’t have a notorious problem in securing the football at times. That passer rating would be even higher. I think the talent here is undeniable, and the situation in Chicago would be a great one for a youthful guy with a ton of upside.
I can’t think of many other rookies with as natural of an ability to scoot past defensive backs on deep routes than Cain — maybe one or two. But, hey, he is a Clemson wide receiver, right? That’s what we’ve come to learn about these guys.
Think of Cain and Taylor Gabriel commanding coverage deep down the field, with Burton underneath and maybe a flat route run by Cohen on a second-down-and-short. Some type of play to throw the coverage all over the place and allow you to take a chance — now, that’s fun to ponder.
I could see Cain being a target if the Bears were to acquire a third-rounder or potentially reach for him later in the second round. He could pan out to be a big-time playmaker in this offense.
