Too early to panic about Chicago White Sox start

Off to a 4-7 start eleven games in, the Chicago White Sox haven’t had the sort of start that the fans, or the players have expected. Nonetheless, it’s still too early to panic.

Three weeks into the season is obviously too early to panic, but it gets hard to stay patient with a team during an early rough patch.

After winning their first two games of the season, the Chicago White Sox have lost seven of their last nine games, including five losses to Tampa Bay and Detroit, two teams who aren’t expected to do much of anything this season.

But it’s still too early to panic.

Sure, there’s been a lot of bad. Yoan Moncada has struck out at least once in every game. The bullpen has been unreliable for the most part, with veterans doing little to help the troubled ‘pen.

Lucas Giolito and Carson Fulmer have had their struggles too.

However, there’s been a lot of good amidst the bad.

Reynaldo Lopez has allowed one earned run in two starts. James Shields has delivered three solid starts, and looks to have (finally) turned a corner. Matt Davidson (AL-leading five home runs) is red-hot. Jose Abreu and Avi Garcia haven’t missed a beat after great 2017 seasons.

And the thing is, it’s only going to get better.

Eloy Jimenez and Michael Kopech are waiting in the wings in Triple-A and Double-A. Young players such as Giolito and Moncada will only get better as the weather gets better. The more the season develops, the more hitters will adjust and shake off slow starts. Despite the bad of the first three weeks, things are looking up for the South Siders.

Also, it could be much worse. Three of the four White Sox wins have been comeback wins. The White Sox could very easily be 1-10 instead of 4-7.

The White Sox will hit the road for their next seven games. A four-game series in Minnesota will begin on Thursday, followed by a three-game set in Oakland against the Athletics. A split in Minnesota followed by a series win or sweep could put the White Sox in great position to carry momentum throughout the remainder of May.
