Chicago Bears Draft: 5 mid-round prospects to watch
By Ryan Heckman
Wyatt Teller, Offensive Guard, Virginia Tech
The Bears are going to draft a guard, I can nearly guarantee you that. If it’s not Quenton Nelson or Will Hernandez, it may as well be Wyatt Teller out of Virginia Tech. Teller is a third or fourth round talent at this point and if he’s there in the fourth for one of the Bears’ two picks, he’d be a great pickup.
Teller is built like a stack of bricks. The guy is an absolute rock-solid man’s man. Just take a look at his weight room production:
- 400 pound power clean
- 460 pound bench press
- 600 pound squat
In 2016, Teller had a fantastic season and looked like a potential second-round talent. Last year, he did not look like the same guy. However, that can be easily fixed. The problem wasn’t talent, it was execution — effort.
Teller didn’t look like he was giving the same type of aggressive effort as he did in 2016, but that could also be due to an internal change during practices and game prep. Was he given a different type of direction from his coaching staff for 2017? Sometimes, in an effort to improve, you can see a player overthink some things and the changes made end up hurting him.
In 2016, Teller was a go-getter. Last season, he seemed to take a little more time to find action. Was that because he was given some kind of direction to pay more attention when setting up his blocks? Did his coaches want him to change how he played, which ended up hurting him in the end?
We don’t know that, but what we do know is what he is capable of doing. Teller is a stout, strong player at guard and would develop well alongside guys like Kyle Long and Cody Whitehair. I think Chicago would be getting a very, very good player in the fourth round with Teller. His situation would be a healthy, exciting one where he could grow the right way.
