Chicago Bears: 5 intriguing draft prospects team has met with
By Ryan Heckman
Simmie Cobbs, Wide Receiver, Indiana
I have seen a lot of fans say things like:
“The Bears don’t need to draft a receiver, now that they have Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Kevin White and potentially Cameron Meredith.”
Well, here’s the deal.
We have no idea what the Bears have in White. Entering his fourth season as a pro, the guy hasn’t been able to stay on the field. At this point, I’d be looking for much more stability at a WR3 or WR4. Secondly, will Meredith be back? Maybe. Will he be the guy he was before? We aren’t sure.
God forbid Robinson isn’t the same guy he used to be; then what?
Simmie Cobbs is a Chicago kid. Heck, he even has a Bears tattoo — that’s dedication. The Bears have met with Cobbs at this year’s combine, and I’m sure knowing the connection, Pace has done his research on the guy.
At 6’4″ 220 pounds, Cobbs would give the Bears another one of those big-bodied receivers they’ve been lacking for a couple of years. Cobbs’ greatest strength is his ability to to control his body. He knows how to use the big frame he possesses. Whether it be in the red zone on fade routes or over-the-shoulder sideline catches, Cobbs gets it done on the more crucial passes.
At the moment, Cobbs could be looking to go at a variety of points in the draft. He’s been projected as high as a third-rounder and as low as a fifth or six rounder. If Chicago is serious about continuing to upgrade the competition at receiver, I wouldn’t be upset if they took Cobbs in the fourth or fifth.
