The Bears still need help at outside linebacker, but added some depth in free agency.

Aaron Lynch

Bringing in Lynch was a smart move that many fans wanted to see happen for a while. It made the most sense because he is still young and familiar with Vic Fangio’s defense. Under Fangio, Lynch was the most successful he has been through the first four years of his career.

In his first two seasons, spent under Fangio, he accumulated 6.0 and 6.5 sacks, respectively, in 30 games. He also managed to get his hands on seven passes. Over the last two seasons, Lynch has been somewhat buried on the depth chart and his effort has been in question. Under Fangio, though, I don’t have any doubt he will be at his best.

The 25-year-old out of South Florida should be able to come in right away and provide the Bears with a solid starter opposite Leonard Floyd, assuming they don’t decide to start a rookie in his place. Regardless, Lynch is a great piece in place whether he starts or is a big part of the rotation off the edge.

Sam Acho

Acho has been more impactful on special teams and as a “glue” guy in the locker room. He is really well liked and respected by his teammates and does a ton of work off the field. I can understand why he was brought back to add some depth and experience from a veteran player, but the Bears would be foolish to count on him as a starter.

Chicago will likely bring in more talent at the position via the draft, thus Acho may not see the field much. But, again, having someone who is familiar with the system and can contribute more in the case of an injury, is a luxury for the Bears.
