Chicago Bears: Grading every free agency move by Ryan Pace
By Ryan Heckman
Two more additions to the Bears will bring dividends both on the field and sideline.
Trey Burton
You can never have enough talent so long as it is affordable. The Bears drafted Adam Shaheen last year in the second round, which made it known that he was a highly-coveted player by Pace. But, the depth at tight end has long been a question mark.
Zach Miller has been very good when on the field, but injuries have hurt his playing time tremendously over the years. Dion Sims was a guy they had high hopes for, but doesn’t appear to be who they thought he might be.
Burton gives the offense a true pass-catching, route-running tight end. Pace and Nagy have confirmed that he will be play of the Travis Kelce type of role in the new offense — and fans should be excited about that. His versatility makes him more of a receiver than tight end, so look out for a breakout season from the ex-Philadelphia Eagle.
Grade: B+
Chase Daniel
This signing was purely about veteran presence and familiarity with the offense. Daniel will be a guy who comes in and helps teach Trubisky the ropes of Nagy’s offense, having played in it in the past. He will be able to come in immediately if, God forbid, Trubisky goes down with an injury, and be someone who can be trusted to run the offense.
He hardly comes with any playing experience, oddly enough, and is the oldest guy on the roster currently. But, his knowledge and veteran presence are what has made him most valuable to other teams historically.
Trust is key, and Nagy’s trusts Daniel. That’s apparent.
