Ryan Pace has demonstrated a willingness to draft players from smaller schools.  We sat down with Vyncint Smith, a wide receiver out of Limestone College, to find out why he might be the next “steal” for the Chicago Bears.

It is uncommon for a school to open up its “pro day” to players from other programs.  However, Vyncint Smith (who shares a connection with the Chicago Bears) is not a common draft prospect.

In fact, NFL teams wanted to see him perform so badly, that the University of South Carolina agreed to invite him to their recent Pro Day.

Let’s just say  Smith did not disappoint.  In fact, he had an incredibly impressive performance.  It becomes even more impressive when you stack his numbers up against NFL Combine participants.

Let’s just put his performance into perspective.  Here is how he would have compared to other wide receivers at the combine:

  • 39.5″ vertical jump – second behind D.J. Chark
  • 10′ 10″ broad jump – second behind D.J. Moore
  • 4.36 40-yard dash – second behind D.J. Chark (seventh overall among all combine participants).

Smith’s performance was so impressive that he drew the interest of New England Patriots head coach, Bill Belichick.  The five-time Superbowl winning head coach made sure to grab Smith at the end of the day for an impromptu meeting.

If you are catching the attention of Bill Belichick, you are most certainly doing something right.

You would think the experience would have been too surreal for the 6-foot-3,195-pound wide receiver.  The Columbia, South Carolina native played football for Westwood High School, right in the Gamecocks’ backyard.  Despite his strong desire to play for his hometown team, he never received a scholarship offer.

After his Pro Day performance, he had everyone wondering why that offer never came.

Even Will Muschamp, the current coach of the Gamecocks certainly wished one had.  In fact, he was even quoted as saying, “he had a fantastic workout.  I wish he’d been a Gamecock.”

So what kind of wide receiver is Vyncint Smith?  Having played at a small school like Limestone College, there is not an overabundance of film out there.  However, from what I have seen, there are a few things that are clear.
