Deon Cain

Wide receiver, Clemson

Pace gave the wide receiver position a complete makeover with the signings of Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel. That to go along with putting an original tender on Cameron Meredith. You have to think that the top three spots on the depth chart are locks.

They now need depth behind those guys as they don’t want to go through the same situation as last year when both Meredith and Kevin White was lost for the season. The Bears have to be prepared and not be forced to play the Josh Bellamy’s and Tanner Gentry’s of the world important roles in the offense. Cain was DeShaun Watson’s go-to target in 2016, and he continues to be a top passing target for the Clemson Tigers even after Watson’s departure.

Cain statistically struggled at Clemson last season. But looking past that, he has some upside to him. He has a decent size at 6-foot-2, 202 pounds, but his most glaring attribute is his top-end speed: he’s a pure straight-line burner.

He does a good job using his hands to get off press coverage and getting over the top of the secondary in position to make a big play downfield. The Bears haven’t had such a guy since Johnny Knox. Cain is a work in progress as a route runner but paired with the right wide receiver coach and system, Cain can someday develop into at the very least a number two wide receiver.
