Chicago Bears: Seven-round post-free agency mock draft
1st round
Marcus Davenport
Edge rusher, UTSA
The Chicago Bears are starved of pass rushers after the releases of Pernell McPhee and Lamarr Houston. There’s still hope that Leonard Floyd can be an impact pass rusher, and he seems to be trending in that direction before the season-ending knee injury. However, it seems that defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has other plans on how he wants to utilize Floyd.
Instead as strictly a pass rusher, Fangio wants to use Floyd just as much in coverage to take advantage of his length, speed, and athleticism. The vision might be more than they want Floyd to dominate games in coverage depending on the weekly match up. With that in mind, the Bears need a pure pass rusher on the other side to better compliment Floyd.
Marcus Davenport arguably has the highest ceiling of all the edge rush prospects. At 6-foot-6, 264 pounds with a 33 5/8 arm length, Davenport has the ideal size and length that Fangio covets out of his edge rushers. He’s also quick and explosive off the snap, with the closing speed to get to the quarterback and take him down.
Davenport is far from a finished prospect, as he will need to improve on setting the edge against the run. However, with Floyd and Lynch, Davenport could certainly make his impact in his first year as a situational pass rusher.
