Chicago Bears: Mocking picks 1-8 of 2018 NFL Draft
By Ryan Heckman
Falling to the Chicago Bears is, in many eyes, one of the top three players in this year’s draft.
The Chicago Bears are now in prime position to select Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson. As one of the best offensive linemen coming out of college in recent memory, Nelson fits the mold as to what Pace and Nagy have wanted to do over the offseason: Build around Trubisky.
One of a young quarterback’s best friends is a strong offensive line and solid run game. With Nelson, you improve both. Howard will benefit greatly from Nelson’s presence, thus making life easier for Trubisky.
See, many people will give the reaction, “Really? A guard?”
I would reply by assuring them that Nelson is a rare find who will affect the Bears’ offense in more than one way. He fills a void left by Josh Sitton and can fill that void for the next ten years to come. He’s as good of a pass blocker as he is a run blocker, and he’s incredibly athletic.
Watching his combine blew me away — as well as most of the nation. At 6’5″ 329 pounds, Nelson is a tank but also agile. He’s proven he can stand his ground against anybody, but also get out in space and block on more creative and lengthy play calls.

With the Bears getting a talent like Nelson, they immediately improve multiple areas of their offense and can cross that enormous need off their list for the remainder of the draft if they so choose. Nelson is a locked-and-loaded starter right away, and Chicago will be thrilled to get him.
