Chicago Bears Rumors: Could Johnathan Hankins sign early next week?
By Ryan Heckman
The defense has been somewhat of an afterthought in free agency, but the Chicago Bears front office isn’t about to let that continue.
The Chicago Bears have made significant moves on the offensive side of the ball thus far, but many wonder when Ryan Pace will address the questions on defense. It appears as though it could be very soon.
There have been several rumblings across social media lately that have defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins set to visit the Bears next week. Nothing has been confirmed as we speak, but I would not be surprised in the least to see not only a visit in the coming days, but a contract signed.
We know that Hankins has met with the Washington Redskins and is expected to meet with the Detroit Lions shortly. The fact that Hankins hasn’t signed with anyone yet tells me a couple of things. First of all, he is being patient. He knows he has a market, so he’s waiting for the right situation — that’s smart.
Second, it tells me that he might not be getting quite the type of money he thought he would. If any teams have made him an offer, and he hasn’t agreed just yet, Hankins might be weighing his options a bit further.
Could the Bears be what Hankins is looking for? They very well could be. It seems like the new coaching staff, along with Vic Fangio, has made strong impressions on free agents thus far. Pace has been able to get the guys he wanted to get and, if that holds true, he’ll get Hankins as well.
In 2017, Hankins finished a strong season with a grade of 85.0 from Pro Football Focus. It’s pretty interesting that the Colts decided to cut him just one year into his three-year deal especially after such a solid year a season ago.
Obviously the Redskins fans out there want him bad. Just check Twitter lately. It’s obvious why, as Hankins is fantastic against the run. He’s an enormous body that will plug gaps with ease. He’s also shown a high motor at times as well, which I think is something Fangio could bring even more to life.

Still just 26 years old, Hankins is just entering the thick of his prime. He could flourish under someone like Fangio and playing alongside a player like Akiem Hicks. I would expect a visit to happen next week and possibly even a deal done. Keep it locked on here at Da Windy City and we will ensure you get updated as soon as we hear anything further.
