Chicago Bears: 5 small school prospects to consider in 2018 NFL Draft
By Ryan Heckman
Cornerback Davontae Harris, Illinois State
The Bears have thankfully addressed the cornerback position and are in much better shape than they were heading into free agency. By keeping two of their own in Kyle Fuller and Prince Amukamara, Chicago has their locked-and-loaded starters on the outside of their secondary.
Now, it is all about depth. Keeping Bryce Callahan to play the slot corner position was key, as he had his best year as a pro in 2017. But, will a guy like recently re-signed Sherrick McManis be someone you can count on if a serious injury were to take place? That’s up for debate.
McManis has had his ups and downs in Chicago, so I wouldn’t crown him the next man up just yet.
Davontae Harris, corner out of Illinois State, is an intriguing prospect for the Bears. Obviously, he would be close to home coming to Halas Hall. He has to be a guy that Pace knows about, playing nearby.
Something I really like about Harris is that he has played really well against the run over his college career. His biggest knock had been getting beaten downfield at times, but his combine proved his speed has been greatly improved — either that, or it’s his inability to move his hips quickly that gets him in trouble.
Harris’ size and speed is something to take notice of, however. At 6’0” 200 pounds, he has that ideal corner size to match up against bigger receivers. He’s physical and has shown great ball skills in the past. If Pace wants to add depth here, he could look to snag Harris in rounds six or seven.
