Chicago Bears Free Agency: 7 potential second wave value signings
By Ryan Heckman
G Jack Mewhort
Arguably the biggest value signing on this list could be found in former Indianapolis Colts guard Jack Mewhort. Having missed 17 games over the last two seasons, Mewhort has gone somewhat overlooked during this free agency period.
In his first two years, Mewhort played 30 of 32 games and remained a durable, solid starting guard in front of Andrew Luck. He played college ball at Ohio State and was drafted as a second round pick in 2014.
Still just 26 years old, Mewhort has time on his side in terms of hurdling the recent knee injuries. Plenty have come back from a string of injuries to continue their careers and Mewhort is out to do the same. Could Chicago be a fit?
If healthy, Mewhort could come in right away and compete for the other guard spot opposite Long. Whitehair could start in the middle and the Bears would have a much-improved interior in comparison to their current options.
After the first wave, the Bears’ focus needs to shift to the trenches with some linebacker sprinkled in. It is likely that they draft multiple linebackers, especially if they can find value on the offensive line in this second tier of free agents.
