Chicago Bears Free Agency: 7 potential second wave value signings
By Ryan Heckman
WR Jordan Matthews
You can absolutely never have enough talent or competition at any position in football, especially if it comes at a bargain. So far, free agency has not been kind to 25-year-old wide receiver Jordan Matthews, but if Pace wants to firmly solidify competition at the position, he could take a flier on the former second-round pick.
For some reason, Matthews has yet to have serious interest from a team.
His most successful seasons came right away as a rookie and sophomore. Since his 2015 campaign, Matthews has not played an entire season due to a couple of injuries. In 2016, he played nearly the whole year but missed two games. In 2017, Matthews suited up for 10 contests.
In his first two seasons, Matthews caught 152 passes for 1,869 yards and 16 touchdowns. At 6’3″, he gives defenses a problem because he has primarily lined up in the slot over his four year career. Most slot guys aren’t necessarily as big as he is, but Matthews has made a living over the middle and has proven he can take it the distance when given space.
At the moment, Cameron Meredith is visiting other teams. The Bears have the right to match any offer, but that doesn’t mean they will. If Meredith is given a contract which Pace views as too expensive, he will be looking elsewhere to fill that void. Matthews makes sense, and with the way free agency is going, he will come at a value price.
