Chicago Bears: Top 25 players in franchise history
By Ryan Heckman
23. Steve McMichael
Steve McMichael, a.k.a “Mongo,” is one of the most memorable personalities the Bears have ever seen. You want to talk about a media darling — that was him. But, don’t forget how dominant of a player he was on the field.
McMichael was a force to be reckoned with in the trenches. He helped that vaunted ’85 defense ultimately bring home the Lombardi Trophy and was voted to the Pro Bowl twice. McMichael remained an absolute rock for a large portion of his career. The staggering statistic that many fans don’t remember was the fact that McMichael started 101 games in a row at one point.
As one of the more consistent pass rushers the Bears have ever seen, McMichael posted three seasons with double-digit sacks and had another six years with seven or more. There was not a single quarterback that felt safe when Mongo was after them — including Jim Kelly pictured above.
After his professional football career, McMichael decided to give another sport a shot. In 1995, he joined World Championship Wrestling as a commentator and would later enter the ring. He made a name for himself eventually as part of the “Four Horseman.”
The former All-American defensive lineman spent 15 years in the NFL after being drafted out of Texas by the New England Patriots. He would ultimately leave the Bears after 13 seasons to play one year for the enemy — the Green Bay Packers.
It is safe to say, though, that McMichael’s best days by far were spent in the Windy City.
