6. WR/DE/HC/Owner George Halas

We are decades past the decision to place his initials on all official Bears gear, but still to this day, people wonder what the “GSH” stands for. Bears fans or not, I get that question often and have a chance to share a quick history lesson near and dear to Chicago’s heart.

George Stanley Halas was the founder of our beloved Bears. Not only did he found the club back in 1919, but Halas also played for and coached the team throughout his career. The original owner of the team had an impact on the game in all aspects.

As previously mentioned, Halas was instrumental in the launching of Red Grange’s professional career which many believe ended up saving pro football.

Haas played for the Decatur Staleys, which would eventually become the Bears, for ten years. As a player, he appeared on both sides of the ball as a receiver and defensive end.

Halas won six championships in total, cementing his legend in Bears history. He was a two-time AP Coach of the Year and eventually found himself, like many others on this list, in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“Papa Bear” spent a total of 64 years with the franchise when it was all said and done. I’d say the least the Bears could do is patch his initials onto official team apparel.
