Chicago Bears: Top 25 players in franchise history
By Ryan Heckman
25. LB Wilber Marshall
Spending time on arguably the greatest defense the league has ever seen, Wilber Marshall was sometimes overlooked for guys like Mike Singletary or Richard Dent. However, Marshall had a fantastic career as a pro.
He spent four seasons with the Bears from 1984 to 1987, later playing for four more teams before retiring in 1995. Marshall came out of the University of Florida and ultimately wound up in the College Football Hall of Fame. The number four overall Gator to ever play for the university, as The Gainesville Sun wrote in 2006, felt he deserved more than that though.
It is true, Marshall never heard his name inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, although many believe he has a case. Marshall had his share of iconic moments as a Bear and was a well-rounded linebacker.
Maybe the most famous play of his career came when he laid a beating on Detroit Lions quarterback Joe Ferguson, leaving him totally unaware of his surroundings. This came in a week 16 matchup during their Super Bowl run in 1985.
Marshall finished his career with a total of 45 sacks and 23 interceptions, which is quite impressive considering the guys he played alongside for a good portion of his career.
The one thing about Marshall that really stings as a Bears fan is the fact that he signed with the Washington Redskins after they had defeated Chicago two straight seasons in the playoffs. Marshall went on to win yet another ring in Washington when they beat Buffalo in 1991.
Regardless, kudos to the man for winning another championship. But, Bears fans will always remember him most for his time spent with their beloved.
