Quenton Nelson

If you’re a Chicago Bears fan, this has to be one of the top names you’ve heard bandied around of late.

No way he makes it to No. 8 overall, right? Don’t even get your hopes up!

But if he does…what do the Bears do?

Well, the answer to the first question is: probably not. For a guy coming in as a guard prospect, I’m not sure Nelson’s stock could possibly be higher.

People are talking about him like a potential top-five pick. In fact, I’ve seen him mocked as high as second overall in some places. Whether that actually happens is doubtful, of course.

And when you throw in the possibility that he could start at right tackle given his wingspan and size, the love for him grows.

Several teams in the top 10 could use him, including the Colts. Assuming he’s there at No 6, that could be an ideal move to protect Andrew Luck/whatever quarterback starts for them.

But if he gets clear of the Colts, I think that’s it: he’ll probably fall to the Bears. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers simply have quite a few needs, which may take them away from the luxury of taking Nelson.

And if that happens, there shouldn’t be a second thought about what to do next. Don’t even entertain selecting anyone else, and don’t dare trade that pick. Take him immediately.

Literally send your fastest front office member to run that card to Roger Goodell. By the way, if you want to hire someone to do that, give me a call. I’m no Taylor Gabriel, but I get the job done. And it would be fun to help bring in arguably the best offensive line prospect the Bears have ever seen.
