The Chicago Bears are on a roll in free agency and just agreed with the ideal backup quarterback.

Developing Mitchell Trubisky has to be priority number one for Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy. When the Chicago Bears drafted him at number two overall a year ago, it was clear the direction they were headed.

This week, you see Pace doing everything he can to ensure Trubisky’s success. The Bears have brought in a few weapons already in Allen Robinson, Trey Burton and Taylor Gabriel. Wednesday, they will add yet another key piece in Trubisky’s development.

A couple of days ago, as we were preparing for the free agency madness, I listed a few candidates the Bears could go after as their backup quarterback. Chase Daniel was my clear-cut number one, for a couple of reasons.

Daniel, a 10th year pro out of Missouri, has spent his entire career as a backup quarterback. While that might not sound too glamorous, Daniel is the perfect fit. It says a lot about a guy if he has spent a decade in the NFL, first of all. That’s tough to do.

But, Daniel has been a backup for all that time. While that might tell the average person he’s not good enough to be a starter, what it tells me is something a little bit deeper than that: Daniel must be good enough to start.

Now, is he a guy you’d want starting for an entire season and years to come? Based on how his career playing time has gone, probably not. But, is he a guy that coaches and front offices have been able to count on being ready? Absolutely.

Daniel is obviously someone teams have seen fit to come in and get the job done, if need be. Otherwise, he would have been out of the league by now.

Not only is Daniel more than capable of filling in for Trubisky, he will be someone who can continue to help the second-year pro develop. If Daniel has made a living off of being a backup quarterback in the NFL, it tells me one thing above all else: He has mastered preparation.

If you’re ready, at all times, to be thrown into a game on a second’s notice, coaches and general managers can see that. It is clear that Daniel has spent his whole career being ready at any given point in time. That’s why he continues to have a job.

One of the underrated characteristics that may get overlooked by the average fan is the fact that Daniel is a man of character and integrity. He’s known as someone you want to have in the locker room. To have a guy like that, especially around many young players, is an enormous lift to the team.

Daniel has experience playing under Nagy’s offense in the past as well, so don’t overlook that aspect of this deal either. He will be able to come in right away knowing a lot more than his new teammates do and can assist in bringing them all up to speed.

This is a masterful signing by Pace and the Bears and it will continue to pay dividends in multiple areas over the coming days. Well done, yet again, Mr. Pace.
