Chicago Bears Free Agency: Day two recap, day three preview
By Ryan Heckman
Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel are perfect fits.
At just 24 years old, Allen Robinson has yet to hit his prime. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound wide receiver was arguably the most coveted skill player in free agency this year, and Pace got him.
Robinson is coming off an ACL injury, although those recoveries are not what they once were, thankfully. In his last two healthy seasons, Robinson put up over 2,200 yards and caught 20 touchdowns. More than just a box score-stuffer, Robinson is a man’s man and is fantastic at overpowering defensive backs to go get the football.
The Bears haven’t seen a receiver like Robinson since the likes of Alshon Jeffery or Brandon Marshall, and they’re hoping Robinson sticks around for a while. If he does, I can’t wait to see what this offense looks like.
In Chicago, he will have a young, versatile quarterback like Trubisky as opposed to the turnover-prone Blake Bortles. Sure, Bortles had a nice stretch late in the season, but Robinson clearly had grown frustrated with his quarterback and it showed in last year’s training camp — just google it.
Pairing Robinson with the quick, electric playmaker in Taylor Gabriel is going to be something fun to watch. Gabriel is widely known for what he can do in the open space, but many don’t realize he is phenomenal at creating separation in his routes.
With the speed of Gabriel and his ability to get downfield in a hurry, it will leave the offense with a lot of options elsewhere — assuming the ball doesn’t go directly to him. Having a backfield like the Bears do, with two solid backs who do very different things and do them well, should bode well for the diverse group of players Nagy and Pace are putting together.
