Chicago Bears: Post-Combine/Pre-Free Agency Mock Draft
Pre-combine pick: Anthony Averett, DB
I had a rare opportunity to witness the combine in person last weekend and it was truly a wonder to watch the quarterbacks and receivers showcase their stuff in person.
I actually had the pleasure to see one of my favorite prospects in this draft, Keke Coutee. This guy really showed out during the combine. He is different from the group of receivers the Bears have. Kevin White, (hopefully) Allen Robinson, and Cameron Meredith are all bigger, jump ball targets. Coutee is a smaller, explosive, space player. He can be used in plays such as jet sweeps and can be relied upon as a lid-popper.
Having that type of player on your offense means that defenses need to be ready; he must be accounted for at all times. For example, his field-stretching capabilities will force safeties to be ready in the event he runs right by the corner or linebacker.
The big play ability is there with Coutee. This was something that the Bears offense simply didn’t have last season. While they do have Tarik Cohen, having too many twitchy playmakers isn’t a bad thing.
The biggest knock with Coutee is that he isn’t the biggest guy (5’11”, 180 lbs) which brings up possible durability issues.
Texas Tech gets dinged every now and then for the “Air Raid Offense” label. But they have produced some quality NFL receiving talent (Danny Amendola, Michael Crabtree, and Wes Welker). Keke Coutee will have every chance to be the next successful one.
