Chicago Bears: Ranking 5 potential free agent quarterbacks for backup job
By Ryan Heckman
5. Tyler Bray
Experience: Sixth season
Career stats: 0 TD, 0 INT, 1 attempt
There are some fans looking at the above information and wondering how in the world Tyler Bray makes this list. It’s a fair question.
Once again, the point of this list is to examine potential fits in the Nagy offense who would offer much more than just their skillset. Bray is a perfect example of a guy who doesn’t necessarily offer a team starting-caliber talent but does give them a lot of knowledge.
After all, isn’t that a similar reason Pace brought in Mark Sanchez last year?
After three years at the University of Tennessee, Bray went undrafted and was signed by the Chiefs. He spent the last few years under Nagy in Kansas City and had some ups and downs, to say the least. Bray has had his share of injuries, including a torn ACL in 2015.
His best moment came in 2013 in a preseason game against the Packers where he tossed three touchdowns en route to a convincing win — I know, that was five years ago.
Last season, Bray came in to relieve Patrick Mahomes II and did not exactly shine. A fumbled handoff turned into a defensive touchdown for the Broncos. He also threw one attempt that fell incomplete.
Don’t shake your head, folks. I told you the free agent quarterback market is rough this year. Backups aren’t always the most talented, but experience and knowledge of the system should definitely come into play. Hey, at least Bray would come cheap.
