Honorable Mention: Tom Savage

Experience: Fifth season

Career stats: 5 TD, 7 INT, 72.5 rating

I had to throw in an honorable mention simply because the free agent crop of quarterbacks is just that unimpressive. However, there may be potential with some of these guys.

Tom Savage spent the last four seasons with the Houston Texans after being selected in the fourth round in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh. If we learned one thing about Savage during those four seasons, it’s that he probably isn’t cut out to be a starter in the NFL.

The consistency simply hasn’t been there for Savage, but he is definitely still worth keeping on a roster. Savage boasts a 6’4″ frame and at 230 pounds, his big body is ideal for standing in the pocket and delivering a strike.

One thing we have seen out of Savage as a pro is that he’s not afraid to do that. He will stand in the pocket, knowing he is about to take a hit, and deliver a ball with the same amount of zip on it as if he were throwing from a clean pocket.

The backup position is such a crucial position in the NFL, but it’s also a tricky one. It’s difficult to find a quarterback that might be good enough to be a starter to backup your current number one. At the same time, to find a guy of that caliber that also won’t cost an arm and a leg is not always easy.

In just four seasons, Savage has had some experiences that will give him some great insight and learning tools to use with a youngster like Trubisky. Having been through situations where he was talked about as a future starter and a guy that people liked a lot, only to end up seeing his team draft Deshaun Watson — it takes a lot of composure and integrity to handle tough situations like that.

Savage has been through some tough times, including a scary concussion. If nothing else, he will have quite a bit of knowledge to offer Trubisky after just a handful of years as a pro.
