Chicago Bears: 5 free agents familiar with head coach Matt Nagy
By Ryan Heckman
4. K Cairo Santos
Since letting Robbie Gould walk, the Bears have struggled mightily to find a replacement. Gould had been one of the most accomplished and accurate kickers in NFL history, but was cut due to a poor finish to his last season as a Bear
Cairo Santos was brought in last year after being let go from the Chiefs due to an injury, and the Bears were high on his abilities.
The three seasons he played in Kansas City, Santos finished with percentages of 88.6 in 2016, 81.1 in 2015 and 83.3 in 2014. His career long is an impressive 54-yarder that came in his last season as a Chief.
Last year, the Bears began the season with Connor Barth once again. And, as fans were accustomed to seeing, he disappointed. During camp, they took a chance on former Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Roberto Aguayo just to give Barth a little competition.
Barth obviously won the job, because let’s be honest, Aguayo had been one of the biggest busts in a long time. As a former second round pick, maybe there was still some hope left for the youngster. In the end, he was still the same wildly inconsistent player.
With Santos knowing Nagy after spending three seasons with the Chiefs, he’s a likely candidate to bring back, at least to compete during training camp. If he is totally healthy, I believe he would be a solid kicker for the Bears. He has a proven track record and is still young enough to have a lengthy career.
If not Santos, I am not sure what the game plan might be going forward when it comes to the kicking situation.
