Teams looking for the next Alvin Kamara should look no further than to the dynamic University of Georgia backfield.  Sony Michel is an electric running back who spent most of the season known as Nick Chubb’s running mate.  That gradually changed over the course of the year, especially with his impressive performances in the 2018 College Football Playoff.

Since then Michel has been flying up the rankings and no doubt is on many general managers’ radars.  He is a physically solid runner, though not a bruising type of running back like Jordan Howard.  However, he does have the strength to break some tackles.  He will get north and south pretty quickly.  Typically you will not see him dancing around in the backfield, risking a big loss.

One of the biggest differences between Michel and Howard is Michel’s quickness.  This is not to be confused with speed, as he and Howard ran similar 40-yard dash times at the combine.  However, Sony Michel’s ability to accelerate through a hole and into the secondary is much different than Howard’s punishing style.

A weakness of Michel’s that may make Bears fans cringe is his pass catching ability.  He may not be an elite pass catcher out of the backfield, but he is more than serviceable in that area.  It is also an area where he can work to improve.  However, his quickness would give Coach Nagy a dimension he doesn’t have in Howard. The big question is whether Michel will even be available when the Bears pick in round two.
