Chicago Bears: Ranking the top 10 current players on roster
By Ryan Heckman
7. RB Tarik Cohen
Experience: Second season
Drafted: 2017, fourth round, 119th overall by CHI
Meet yet another fourth round pick by Pace that looks to be turning out just fine. Tarik Cohen came from a smaller school, which might be the reason why so many teams slept on him. The North Carolina A&T standout was one of Pace’s favorite prospects in the draft last year, and it’s easy to see why.
Cohen is lightning in a bottle. The kid is the most electric playmaker the Bears have seen since the likes of Devin Hester. In the open field, Cohen gives you the feeling like he could score at any given moment — sound familiar?
What makes Cohen so special is that the guy is only 5’6″ yet one of the more difficult players to tackle in the league.
Players like Cohen do not come along too often. The combination of pure speed and brute force is incredibly dangerous. Not only is he hard to catch, but if you somehow do catch him, you’ll have one heck of a time getting him to the ground.
A guy spoken so highly of must have lit up the stat sheet, right? Not so fast. In his rookie year, Cohen amassed 723 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns. He did have a touchdown on special teams as well.
One of the more head-scratching questions for Bears fans in 2017 was: “Why isn’t that guy on the field?”
For some reason, Dowell Loggains did not want to use him. Not only that, but John Fox backed him up on that notion at times.
“Sometimes the defense dictates what we do on offense,” was the infamous quote given by Fox after one game last year.
That type of excuse for not allowing your most exciting player to see the field is one of many reasons neither of those coaches are with the team anymore.
Needless to say, Cohen figures to see ample time in Matt Nagy’s offense. Bears fans should be anxiously awaiting to watch how Nagy uses a guy like Cohen. It should be a fun year.
