The Chicago Bears have already held an NFL Combine meeting with one of the more fascinating receiver prospects in the 2018 NFL Draft: SMU receiver Courtland Sutton.

The Chicago Bears will certainly be doing their due diligence on quite a few prospects at the NFL Combine this weekend. That said, one should still take some notice of who they’re looking at.

At the very least, I’m quite intrigued that they’ve met with one of the most interesting receivers in this draft, SMU’s Courtland Sutton.

Sutton hasn’t been mocked to the Bears as often as Calvin Ridley, the consensus top receiver in the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft, has. And since he played somewhat lesser competition at SMU, a lot of people will have their questions about him. He definitely isn’t a completely polished prospect in the same vein as Ridley.

But taking one look at him should tell you why NFL teams are so fascinated by what he could bring to their offenses.

With wide receivers taking their initial measurements today, Sutton checked in at a big 6-foot-4, 218 pounds. Plus, he showed he has the mitts to catch NFL footballs, too.

While the Chicago Bears don’t necessarily need a massive receiver like Sutton to run a successful offense, the idea of having one should excite Bears fans.

After all, what was the appeal of having someone like Alshon Jeffery? You could throw the ball up in his general vicinity, and he had an uncanny knack for coming down with it. Sutton has some of those same traits.

On top of that, Sutton shows some speed for a big man after he makes the catch. And…saying that he’s “hard to bring down” is an understatement. The man runs with the football like an angry rhino.

Now again, the Bears likely won’t have anything to do with Sutton unless he makes to the second round. Then, they’d have to hope he falls to them or that they have assets to grab up and grab him.

That said, if he goes off at the Combine and blows people away, that sentiment might change.

But, as I have mentioned before, Sutton looks like that Ryan Pace kind of pick to me. He’s raw, but his physical ability pushes his ceiling to a level far beyond any receiver in this draft. Without question. I will literally not hear any argument that Ridley has the potential of Sutton.

Whether or not Pace might be thinking of taking a chance on that potential in the first or second round of the draft remains to be seen, though.

For now, we know they’re at least checking up on him.
