“With the 145th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select…”

Western Kentucky. Mike White. 145. player. 57. . Quarterback

Oh, I know what you’re thinking: “How dare you spend a draft pick on a Western Kentucky quarterback! Also, they have so many other needs!” I know it seems sketchy at best, but hear me out.

Outside of Mitchell Trubisky, the only other quarterback on the roster is Mike Glennon, and there’s a 100% he’s getting axed. Mark Sanchez will be a free agent. And while I think the Bears will bring in a vet to back up Trubisky, like Chase Daniel, they should give serious thought towards drafting and developing a backup.

The last few years has seen Western Kentucky’s offense be among the best in college football. In fact, their program has produced NFL quarterbacks in the past (most recently Brandon Doughty).

At the Senior Bowl, White was able to put himself on the map with some solid practices.

At 6’4″, he has decent size to play quarterback. Interestingly enough, the guy used to be an All-American high school pitcher. That might explain the impressive arm strength and good touch. White also has decent accuracy and possesses good field vision.

However, his protection was incredibly bad last season. Opposing defenses sacked White a whopping 44 times. The Chargers drafting Forrest Lamp the year before may have caused this. Maybe he needs improvement at recognizing the blitz.

He might be considered a bit of a project, but the reality is that he won’t be called upon to win games for the Bears. For the time being, Ryan Pace grabbing a developmental prospect and having him groomed should be on the checklist for this year’s draft.
