Chicago Bears: 5 offensive line targets in 2018 NFL Draft
1. Quenton Nelson, G (Notre Dame)
Well, duh.
Nelson’s one of the best prospects in the 2018 NFL Draft, period. And as much as people hate the idea of drafting a guard in the top 10, Nelson isn’t your average bear in that regard (pun intended?).
The only knock on him might be the fact that he isn’t an exceptional athlete in terms of his movement skills, though he certainly possesses enough quickness to do the job.
And truthfully, knowing Pace’s penchant for drafting athletes with upside, the Notre Dame guard doesn’t entirely fit that description.
If you get past that, though, there’s a ton to love about Nelson.
He plays with incredible balance and core strength, simply dominating at the point of attack. When you overpower him at the line of scrimmage, you’ve really done something.
And what he lacks in raw athletic ability, he makes up for with unbelievable instincts. College football players don’t do stuff like this.
Also, for an ostensibly decent person, Nelson plays like he hates you and wants to pull your soul out through your stomach. So there’s that.
I’m sorry…did we just witness a murder?
Though they might elect to fill their void at left tackle in free agency first (a prudent idea), you can’t discount this possibility yet.
And as weird as it might seem at first, it would pay off big time if Nelson’s as good as people expect him to be.
Drafting Nelson would likely be a third option for the Bears if they lose out on an earlier target and can’t trade down. But believe me, it will be an option that they explore at No. 8 if he’s still on the board.
