Chicago Bears: Trey Burton to hit free agency, will likely be target
By Ryan Heckman
As of Friday, it is believed that the Eagles will not re-sign the versatile tight end.
The good news for the Philadelphia Eagles is that they are of course reigning Super Bowl champions. The bad news, though, is that they need to cut ties with a handful of players in order to stay under the salary cap. One of those players will be a likely free agent target for the Chicago Bears.
Trey Burton, the multi-faceted tight end who backed up Zach Ertz while in Philadelphia, showed a lot of promise in 2017 when he saw the field. Because of that, the Eagles will not be able to afford to keep him. While it’s almost certain he hits free agency, where he lands is the next big question.
Burton would fit nicely on the Bears, as I have said here recently. He is a phenomenal pass-catching tight end who runs routes like a wideout. Not only that, but he is a serviceable blocker as well.
Burton is only 26 years old and would be a great pairing with second year pro Adam Shaheen. In Matt Nagy’s offense, the two would surely thrive together as Nagy is known for using his tight ends in very unorthodox, yet creative ways.
Being able to run two tight end sets with a dynamic backfield of Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen would make the Bears’ offense a whole lot more interesting than it was a year ago.

Not many tight ends out there have the wherewithal that Burton does. If you check out some of his top plays from 2017, he makes some phenomenal catches. He truly does look like a wide receiver in a tight end’s body. If Shaheen continues to develop, that will make two of them.
They say a good tight end is the best possible security blanket for a young quarterback. At this point, Mitch Trubisky could wind up having two of them if Ryan Pace does what he is rumored to do — get Burton to Chicago.
