Top 15 all-time batting averages: 1

1. Riggs Stephenson/ Bill Madlock (.336)

When it comes to top of the Cubs batting average list for all time, there was a tie. Both Bill Madlock, and Riggs Stephenson finished first with a .336 average. Neither player was with the Cubs organization very long.

Stephenson was only with them nine years, plating just under 4,000 AB’s. In those at bats he would amass 39 total homers in a Cubs uniform. Before his time with Chicago he spent five seasons with the Cleveland Indians organization.

Bill Madlock may have spent only three years with the Cubs, from 1974-76, but he became the best hitter in team history in that time. In the 1975 season, Madlock made his first all star team when he hit for an average of .354 and 64 RBI’s, he also finished 12th in MVP voting that year.

Given the Cubs messy history it is not a shock that many of the players on this list were pre 1950’s. With the team in the midst of a multi-year championship run, in 10 years this list could look entirely different.
