By Eric Brown
Top 15 all-time batting averages: 11-8
11/10. Billy Herman/Frank Demaree (.309)
As you can probably tell by now this list is full of people many of you have likely never heard of, as they were around before your parents time.
Billy Herman spent 10 years of his 16 year career with the North Siders, reaching an average of .341 in his fourth professional season. From there on Herman spent time with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. After a long battle, Herman eventually made the Hall of Fame in 1975.
Yet another player from the 30’s, Frank Demaree spent his first six season with the Cubs. His best season was in 1937 when he hit 17 homers with 115 RBI’s
9. George Gore (.315)
Surprise, another player who’s entire career spanned the 1800’s. In over 700 games for the Cubs, Gore would hit an unbelievable .315, including a .360 average in the 1880 season. He was part of the team when Ned Williamson became the first player to hit three home runs in a major league game.
8. King Kelly (.316)
For someone who’s name starts with the word King, Kelly certainly played like one during his time with the Cubs. Kelly spent 7 seasons with the Cubs (80-87), during that time he amassed 33 homers, which for that ERA was consider a lot.
