Notre Dame locks in monster safety tandem

Assuming that everyone stays locked in for National Signing Day in February, Notre Dame fans should be absolutely salivating over the future at the safety position.

Griffith and Derrik Allen (Marrieta, GA), a four (borderline five)-star recruit in his own right, could give the Irish a dominating duo at safety the likes of which they haven’t seen in years.

After all, Allen has graded out favorably to former Notre Dame/current Minnesota Vikings star Harrison Smith. And he can do stuff like this…

Oh boy.

For now, I could see Griffith and Allen locked in behind incumbent starts Jalen Elliott and Nick Coleman to start next season, also vying for playing time with Devin Studstill.

But let’s also be honest here: none of these players are so good that they couldn’t potentially be jumped on the depth chart next season. I definitely wouldn’t expect either Griffith or Allen to get first-team reps early in the season, but what if Kelly wanted to see a spark later in the year that they’re not seeing on the back end?

It’s not like we haven’t seen that before at Notre Dame.

Even if they have to wait a year to get on the field much, look out. These two could be absolute terrors together in the deep part of the field for Notre Dame’s defense.
