Jerome Baker (Outside Linebaker), Ohio State

Oklahoma fans should remember Ohio State linebacker Jerome Baker from last seasons matchup. Baker had a 68-yard pick-6 to give the Buckeyes a 14-0 lead in an eventual win.

Throughout his college career, Baker has made a name for himself by making big plays in big games. In one of the biggest games of his career, Baker will have a chance to add to his growing list of clutch plays.

With second round pick Raekwon McMillan gone to the NFL, Baker is now the top linebacker for the Buckeyes. Against a dynamic Oklahoma offense that thrives both running and passing, Baker will have to make plays all over the field. Whether it’s run-stopping, pass-defending, or blitzing, Jerome Baker‘s role will be a big one, and a defining one.

While many scouts believe that he is a first round prospect, Baker still has work to do. Entering his second season starting, Baker (like Denzel Ward) has to show that he can solely make an impact on the outcome of a game. Baker has made big plays in big games, but entering his first season as the main linebacker, Baker needs to make a big impact in every game.

Despite there being many question marks on defense, the Bears have a very good linebacker group.

With veterans Danny Trevethan, Pernell McPhee and Jerrell Freeman, as well as 2016 first round pick Leonard Floyd, the Bears don’t need another linebacker yet. Injuries have been a major concern for McPhee and Trevathan, and with another injury, the Bears could look to add a young piece to a strong-but injury prove linebacker core.

If Baker can step up and continue to make big plays on a consistent basis, he can become a serious option for the Bears in the 2018 draft. Of course other positions will be of bigger need, but if the Bears decide to address those via trades or free agency, Jerome Baker could be the Bears top pick in next year’s draft.
