2. Bradley Sowell, OT

The Chicago Bears decided to have eight offensive linemen on their first 53-man roster. From left to right, Charles Leno, Kyle Long, Cody Whitehair, Josh Sitton and Bobby Massie are the starters and they are backed up by Hroniss Grasu, Tom Compton and Bradley Sowell.

All in all, eight is a good number on the offensive line. However, a team could certainly get away with only having seven. The Bears have a strong starting unit up front, but they severely lack depth at the position. Grasu can handle the backup interior lineman spot while Compton is the better swing tackle. I just don’t see where Sowell fits.

Sowell does have some starting NFL experience, but none of it is good. He is atrocious in pass protection and is not much of a run blocker either. Sure, he spent some time as a starting left tackle in the NFL, but it is not like he was any good. I would rather have a young unknown as the Bears’ eighth offensive lineman as opposed to Sowell. We know what Sowell brings to the table and it is not pretty.

Hopefully, the Bears will attack the waiver wire in search of a younger offensive lineman with some upside to replace Sowell. Max Rich is a raw and athletic offensive tackle who needs some work but showed a lot of upside with the New England Patriots this preseason. Rich immediately stands out as a player who the Bears should replace Sowell with. Hopefully, a move like that happens on Sunday.
