The Chicago Bears appear ready to go into this waiver wire period with five receivers on the roster. Kevin White, Kendall Wright, Markus Wheaton, Joshua Bellamy and Deonte Thompson make up the less than impressive group.

The Bears surprisingly cut undrafted rookie Tanner Gentry earlier in the day. Gentry appeared to have an inside track to a roster spot once Cameron Meredith went down with an injury, but the Bears clearly believe that they could sneak him onto the practice squad. Personally, I am not so sure.

Regardless, I would love to see the Bears shoot for some upside at the wide receiver position and Austin Carr stands out as the most interesting guy on the market.

Carr was absolutely fantastic at Northwestern as a senior in 2016. Last season, he caught an impressive 90 passes for 1,247 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was an elite playmaker who showed the ability to make consistent plays in the middle of the field.

However, Carr does not have a great athletic profile and went completely undrafted. He received an opportunity with the New England Patriots and looked like he belonged on an NFL field in the preseason. The Patriots are loaded with elite wide receivers so they simply did not have room for Carr, but the Bears could easily create room for him.

Carr is an interesting player who I believe has a nice future in the slot. The Bears could certainly stand to add him to their mix as a sixth receiver, opting to cut down their running back or tight end situation. Carr would likely be the backup to Kendall Wright in the slot this season, but he would be a nice player to have around for the long-term.

When it comes down to it, Carr is a tough and solid player who simply has a knack for getting open. The Chicago Bears have arguably the worst collection of wide receivers in the league and would benefit from adding a potential impact player like Carr.
