Chicago Bears 2018 NFL Draft targets to watch: Alabama vs. Florida State
Derwin James, SS, Florida State
Arguably the best defensive player in the country, Florida State safety Derwin James is one of the top prospects for next year’s draft. After missing most of last season with a knee injury, James comes into the season as one of the most versatile players in all of college football.
James didn’t have much of an opportunity to shine after playing in just two games last season but now has a chance to instantly be on the radar of fans all over the country on a big stage. As before mentioned, James is one of the most versatile players in the country. Look for James to make an impact all over the place, with big hits as a linebacker, or interceptions as a safety or cornerback.
The hype around James is real. Many (including himself) believe that he is a Heisman contender, while others believe that he will be the top pick in the draft. Much like Fitzpatrick, James is facing off against a dynamic offense on a big stage. If James wants to solidify himself as one of the nation’s top players and live up to the hype, he will need to stand out on Saturday.

Projected as the number one pick by some, Derwin James is one of the most NFL ready players in the country. As mentioned before, for a Bears team lacking young, impactful talent in their secondary, Derwin James might just be a future star for the Bears. James needs to have a big year to validate this since he missed most of last season, but all signs point to him being the real deal.
Like Fitzpatrick, availability is going to be an issue for the Chicago Bears and James. If James has the year that many expect him to, there’s no chance that he’s available past the top three. But the slight chance of landing him is enough for Bears fans to keep a close eye on him, as James is as close to a future star as there is in all of College Football.
